i just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone who came out to our first monthly show at Union Hall on Saturday. You people are awesome. You will dance to Pat Benetar and you make us very very happy.
the next Spicy Times is february 27th (right jin…?) and will be even SPICIER
The new Asobi Seksu album, Hush, comes out on Polyvinyl on February 17. Just in time for Valentine’s Day. Damn, I hate that “holiday.” Anyhoo, Asobi Seksu, is going on tour to promote the new songs, including a hometown show in New York at Bowery Ballroom on April 2. Check out their MySpace for more tour dates (does anyone else think Yuki looks like Bjork in that photo?).
Get a copy of their new single, “Familiar Light,” on Pitchfork.
A Faulty Chromosome - “Either You Don’t Love Me Or I Don’t Love You”
I kind of love this song.
"Every time you feel wonderful, baby, I feel bad. Either you don’t love me or I don’t love you, oh yeah. When you remind me of all the good times, I feel sad. Either you don’t love me or I don’t love you, oh yeah."
DON’T SAY MAYBE. DON’T SAY NO. DON’T SAY HOLD ON. DON’T SAY SLOW. DON’T SAY NEXT TIME. DON’T SAY WHEN. DON’T SAY LATER. DON’T SO THEN. DON’T BE CAUTIOUS. DON’T THINK TWICE. DON’T PLAY IT SAFE. DON’T PUT IT ON ICE. DON’T CHEW IT OVER. DON’T KICK IT AROUND. DON’T WAIT AND SEE. DON’T TRY TO WORK IT OUT.
I can’t quite put my finger on what Vessels reminds me of. Maybe Mirah mixed with Velocity Girl? There is definitely a K Records vibe to the songs that I adore — that quiet, witty girl power. The Staten Island based band (yeah seriously) also has one of my favorite lyrics thus far in 2009 from their song above “Good Advice” — “I act like a stupid girl… what’s your excuse?” HAHA!
Remember the band Relay from Philadelphia? Well, they are now called Arc In Round, which was the name of a Disco Inferno song. They are still filled with ‘gazey goodness and romantical vocal murmurs. They’ve got a bunch of tour dates with Frightened Rabbit in January and a date with The Swirlies in February! Check their MySpace for details.
The new Downtown Records signing, Miike Snow (pronounced “Mike”), has a really great song posted on their MySpace called “Animal.” I love the lyric — “In your eyes I see the eyes of somebody who could be strong, tell me if I’m wrong. Hey now I’m pulling your disguise up, are you free or are you tied up?”
Can’t wait to hear more about this group! The MySpace lists both Stockholm and New York as the location… so mysterious.
I’ve been following this shoegazy band from New York called Soundpool for a few years now. They are one of the few bands who have arrived in my inbox that I checked out and actually liked. Totally my steez. They have dreamy, hazy keys and sweet, gentle female vocals that make me feel like I am floating in the air.
The band is currently working on their next set of songs (can’t wait), but you should check out their last two albums, On High and Dichotomies & Dreamland.
The band is playing the Spicy Times premiere party at Union Hall on Saturday, January 24 with The Kiss Off. Should be a heavenly pairing!
There have beenmassive changes in the Music Industryover this past year! Looking at this past year in review, here’s what happened in the A&R world. In 2008, there were forty-four A&R executives hired compared with eighty in 2007. Of those forty-four hires, twenty-six were new to the profession and eighteen were previous A&R executives at other labels at some point in their career. During 2008, sixty-four A&R executives were let go or chose to leave their A&R job which was far less than the one-hundred, twenty-nine A&R executives who were let go in 2007.
The Kiss Off - “Fold Up Like a Piece of Paper” (new demo!)
Just got a couple new demos from Brooklyn band, The Kiss Off, who previously self-released an EP called Brace. I really like their new self-proclaimed “impressionist” direction. I guess it appeals to the quirky 90s shoegaze-phile in me. I am excited that the band will be playing the premiere of the Spicy Times party at Union Hall on Saturday, January 24! Also on the bill is another gazy band I’ve been following for a couple years now, Soundpool. More about them tomorrow…
Also check out the video for The Kiss Off’s song, “Amplify,” another atmospheric, electronic track of theirs that I am digging. It’s below.
I saw Henry Wolfe perform on Saturday night at Union Hall, and his songs caught me by surprise. Sweet, poetic and endearing… I can’t wait to hear more. Why do I love the singer-songwriters so much? Maybe it’s that whole “I’m vulnerable and singing with only a guitar and a mic” thing. Try it yourself it’s not that easy. It’s brave and also tests whether you are a good songwriter and singer all at once.
Interesting (or maybe not) factoid: Wolfe is actress Meryl Streep’s son. However, he doesn’t seem spoiled by a privileged life. That is a big plus in my book. He also used to be in the now defunct Bravo Silva. Incidentally, his old bandmate Joel accompanied him at the show.
